The Rebuilt St. Mary's Church of Los Angeles consecrated

Publish Date
Since mid-2009, members of the congregation of St. Mary’s Church, Los Angeles, have been working earnestly on expanding the church building at 10034 Laurel St., Whittier, to meet the growing needs of the congregation. On July 14, 2012, the expanded and remodeled church building was sanctified by the Archbishop of the Malankara Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church in N. America, H.E. Mor Titus Yeldho. The Archbishop of the Western Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church in the USA, H.E. Mor Clemis Kaplan blessed the congregation with his presence as well.

Rev. Fr. Kurian Puthukayil, Rev. Fr .Thomas Korah, and  the Vicar Rev. Fr. Sabu T. Choratil also lead the services

The expansion, which commenced in July 2011, added a floor providing space for the proper conduct of Sunday School and other spiritual activities, while also remodeling and enhancing the beauty of the church as a whole.

The congregation established in 1982 thus reached another significant milestone in its history. The altars of the church were consecrated by H.H. Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka I on May 14, 1994. St. Mary’s continues to be the first and thus far the only Malankara Church in the USA with the distinction of being consecrated by a Patriarch of Antioch.  Even though this parish remains small in numbers it has made several contributions to the Holy Church,  in terms of liturgical publications, being at the forefront of using technology in service of the Church – being the first parish to establish a presence on the web, maintaining websites related to the Church and its spiritual heritage, automating the liturgical calendar, etc. – and also in helping seed parishes in several cities in the West Coast.
