Rev. Fr. Mathews Kavumkal to be elevated to Corepiscopos

Malankara Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church in North America is fortunate to have another senior priest added to the isle of Corepiscopos this week.  Rev. Fr. Mathew Kavumkal, Vicar of St. Ignatius Syrian Orthodox Church, Carrollton (Dallas), Texas  will be elevated to Corepiscopos by His Eminence Mor Titus Yeldho, Archbishop & Patriarchal Vicar,  in the presence of H. G Dr. Thomas Mor Themotheos, Metropolitan of Kottayam Diocese and H. G. Markose Mor  Chrisostomos, Metropolitan of the Evangelical Association of East on Saturday, August 25th, 2012 during the celebration of Holy Qurbono at St. Ignatius Church.  Many priests, deacons, dignitaries and a large crowd of faithful and friends are expected at the above auspicious event as well at the felicitating meeting thereafter.

Rev. Fr. Mathews, popularly known as ‘Kavumkalachen’, is the younger son of Mr. Thomas & Mrs. Annamma, Kavumkal House, members of St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Pangada of Kottayam Diocese, India.  Fr. Mathews was ordained as Deacon on June 2nd 1974 and as Priest on September 25th 1977. During the past 35 years, Achen has served as Vicar of many parishes under the Dioceses outside Kerala, Persian Gulf Area, Kottayam  as well as in the American Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church.  While in India  Fr. Mathews served the Jacobite Syrian Church as its Managing Committee member,  as Clergy Secretary of Kottayam diocese, as Secretary to the Diocese outside Kerala and as Vice President of Youth Association. Achen is well known in the ecumenical  circle of Dallas and he is currently serving as the President of Kerala Ecumenical Christian Fellowship, an association of various denominations in the Dallas area. Rev. Fr. Mathews  Kavumkal  is  presently serving the American Archdiocese as one of the members of the Diocesan council.

Rev. Fr. Mathews is married to Elsamma Mathews and they have two children; a daughter, Reju Ann Mathew of Australia and a son, Renjith Thomas Mathew of Banglore.
