On June 20, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated the Holy Qurobo at St. Georges Church in Frias – Argentina.

 

His Holiness was assisted by their Eminences: Mor Chrysostomos Youhanna Ghassaly, Patriarchal Vicar in Argentina, and Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Shemoun, Patriarchal Vicar and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh.

 

In his sermon, His Holiness spoke about the time between the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Pentecost, during which the Church celebrates the Lord’s promises. He also spoke about Simon Peter who had renounced the Lord, but repented and became courageous after the Pentecost, going out in public and preaching and gathering many souls for the church and the glory of God. He mentioned the importance of the renewal in the Holy Spirit in keeping the faith and holding firmly to it.

His Holiness also expressed his joy to be among the Syriac people in Frias and he blessed them all asking the Lord to protect His small flock in Frias.

On June 20, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II met with His Excellency Dr. Ástor Anibal Padula, Governor of Frias, at the Municipality of Frias in Argentina.

His Excellency welcomed His Holiness in Argentina, and in Frias. He praised His Holiness’s efforts in defending Christianity in the Middle East, as well as taking care of the Church in the diaspora.

His Holiness thanked His Excellency for his warm reception. He spoke about the historical presence of our Syriac Orthodox Church in Argentina; His Holiness also recalled the Syriac genocide Sayfo, and spoke about the situation in Syria and the countries of the Middle East. He also raised the case of the two abducted archbishops of Aleppo Boulos Yaziji and Mor Gregorius Youhanna Ibrahim.

His Holiness and His Excellency moved then to Park of May 25 in Frias, where they put a wreath of roses before the monument of Liberty.

On June 20, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II visited St. Mary Catholic Church in Frias, Argentina.

He was received by Rev. Fr. Sergio Lamberti, parish priest of St. Mary Church, and a crowd of faithful.

His Holiness raised prayer of thanks in the Church, after which he spoke to all who were present.

His Holiness noted the good relations between the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, recalling the long mutual ecumenical journey, and the agreement of 1984 between both Churches. He also wished that full communion between all churches may be reached soon.

His Holiness asked all who were present to pray for peace in Syria, Iraq, and countries of the Middle East.

On June 20, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II inaugurated a Sayfo monument for the commemoration of the martyrs of Sayfo Genocide, in April 9 Park in Frias, Argentina.

The inauguration was attended by their Eminences: Mor Chrysostomos Youhanna Ghassaly, Patriarchal Vicar in Argentina, Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Chamoun, Patriarchal Vicar and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh, and His Grace Bishop Luis Urbanc, Catholic Bishop of Catamarca, and His Excellency Dr. Ástor Anibal Padula, Governor of the Frias.

On June 19, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II arrived to St. Georges Church in Frias – Argentina.

He was accompanied by their Eminences: Mor Chrysostomos Youhanna Ghassaly, Patriarchal Vicar in Argentina, Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Shemoun, Patriarchal Vicar and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh, and Very Rev. Raban Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director.

His Holiness offered a prayer of thanksgiving and received the certificate of “Guest of Honor” from the Governor of the city.

At the end of the prayer, His Holiness blessed the faithful who were gathered in the church.

On June 18, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II met the Governor of Cordoba Mr. Juan Schiaretti.
 
His Holiness was accompanied by their Eminences: Mor Chrysostomos Youhanna Ghassaly, Patriarchal Vicar in Argentina, Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Shemoun, Patriarchal Vicar and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh, and Very Rev. Raban Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director. The meeting was also attended by ministers of the local government of Cordoba in the presence of the Honorable Consul of Syria in Cordoba Mr. Abdallah Saddi.
 
His Holiness spoke about his official visit to the city of Cordoba and how it feels like he is among one big family. He thanked the Governor for helping the community preserve their heritage and traditions as well as the educational support they provide in general.
He then spoke about the situation of Christians in the Middle East, especially in Iraq and Syria and the difficulties and challenges due to the war. He also mentioned the problem of migration that is affecting the demography of the country.
His Holiness asked also to pray for the safe return of the two abducted Archbishops of Aleppo Mor Gregorius Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji.

On June 18, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II visited the municipality of Cordoba.

His Holiness was accompanied by their Eminences: Mor Chrysostomos Youhanna Ghassaly, Patriarchal Vicar in Argentina, Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Shemoun, Patriarchal Vicar and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh, and Very Rev. Raban Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director. He met with members of the municipal council in the presence of the Consul of Syria in Cordoba Mr. Abdallah Saddi.

His Holiness expressed his joy to visit the city of Cordoba to which many of the members of the Syriac Orthodox Church came at the turn of the twentieth century. He thanked the council for what the city had offered to our people, helping them to preserve their heritage and traditions. He then spoke about the situation of Christians in the Middle East, especially in Iraq and Syria and the heavy migration of Christians due to the crisis.

His Holiness reminded that over 6 years passed over the abduction of the two Archbishops of Aleppo Mor Gregorius Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji and asked all to pray for their safe return to their dioceses.

In his sermon, His Holiness spoke about the Feast of the Pentecost and the words of the Lord Jesus Christ: “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14: 27) because the Holy Spirit encourages the faithful and gives them wisdom. He also spoke about the persecutions that the fathers of the church endured so that they preserve the faith of the church and her tradition despite the threats and trouble.
He also expressed his joy to be among the Syriac community in Cordoba and meet them and asked them to continue to preserve the traditions that they learned from the forefathers who emigrated from the East to Argentina.

After the evening prayer, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II inaugurated a Memorial Plate for the commemoration of the martyrs of Sayfo Genocide, at the entrance of St. Aphrem Church in Buenos Aires.
 
The inauguration was attended by their Eminences: Mor Chrysostomos Youhanna Ghassaly, Patriarchal Vicar in Argentina, Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Chamoun, Patriarchal Vicar and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh, Mor Titus Boulos Touza, Apostolic Nuncio to the Syriac Evangelical Mission Churches in Brazil, as well as a crowd of clergy and faithful.
 
His Eminence Cardinal Mario Aurelio Poli, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and their Graces Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Buenos Aires Yacoub Al-Khoury and Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Ignatius along with many clergy from sister churches also attended the inauguration of the Sayfo Memorial Plate.

On June 15, 2019, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II presided over ramsho (evening) prayer of the Feast of Pentecost, at St. Aphrem Church in Buenos Aires.

A special prayer was also held for the commemoration of the martyrs of Sayfo Genocide.

The prayer was attended by their Eminences: Mor Chrysostomos Youhanna Ghassaly, Patriarchal Vicar in Argentina, Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Chamoun, Patriarchal Vicar and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh, Mor Titus Boulos Touza, Apostolic Nuncio to the Syriac Evangelical Mission Churches in Brazil, as well as clergy and faithful from Buenos Aires.

His Eminence Cardinal Mario Aurelio Poli, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and their Graces Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Buenos Aires Yacoub Al-Khoury and Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Ignatius also attended the prayer along with many clergy from sister churches.

At the end, His Holiness gave a short sermon in which he expressed his happiness to meet his spiritual children on his first apostolic visit to Argentina. He spoke about the Feast of the Pentecost which is a feast that unites Christians in the one Holy Spirit Who dwelled on the Apostles as promised by the Lord Jesus Christ. He added that the Syriac Orthodox Church celebrates today the commemoration of the Syriac Genocide Sayfo. The Church celebrates the courage of the martyrs who did not fear death but loved the Lord and happily gave their lives for Him, conquering death in this world. His Holiness added that the martyrs of Sayfo are the living members of the Church who taught us to build our church on the strong rock of faith, namely on our Lord Jesus Christ.
