On December 17, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II met Dr. Balasz Major, Head of the Hungarian Archeology Mission to Syria, at the Patriarchal Syriac Center in Budapest.
During the meeting, His Holiness discussed with Dr. Major the different activities that will be developed at the new Syriac Patriarchal Center in Budapest, including future seminars and hosting academic lectures and cultural programs at the Center. They also spoke about ways of cooperation between the Hungarian Archeological Mission in Syria and the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate through EPDC and Antioch Syrian University.
 
 
 

On December 17, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II met His Excellency Mr. Tristan Azbej, Hungarian State Secretary for the Aid of the Persecuted Christians, with volunteers from the State Secretariate, at the Patriarchal Syriac Center in Budapest.
Their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Archbishop of Mosul, Kirkuk, Kurdistan and Environs, Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar in the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, and Very Rev. Raban Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director were also present.
During the meeting, the volunteers offered some face masks to be distributed on children of Syria and Iraq on the occasion of Christmas.

On December 16, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II received the keys of the building which the Government of Hungary gave to the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate to administer as a Syriac Center for the period of 50 years. This is the first Syriac Center in Hungary.
His Excellency Mr. Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary personally handed over the keys in the presence of His Excellency Mr. Zsolt Semjen, Deputy Prime Minister of Hungary and His Excellency Mr. Tristan Azbej, Hungarian State Secretary for the Aid of the Persecuted Christians.
His Holiness was accompanied by their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Archbishop of Mosul, Kirkuk, Kurdistan and Environs, Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar in the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, and Very Rev. Raban Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director.
After the official key handling ceremony, His Holiness and the accompanying delegation conducted a blessing service of the center. Following a discussion concerning the support of Hungary to the Christians in the Middle East, the participants were shown around the new center.

 

On December 15, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II met His Excellency Mr. Tristan Azbej, Hungarian State Secretary for the Aid of the Persecuted Christians, at the headquarters of the State Secretariate in Budapest.
His Holiness was accompanied by their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Archbishop of Mosul, Kirkuk, Kurdistan and Environs, Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar in the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, and Very Rev. Raban Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director.
First, His Holiness visited the chapel at the State Secretariate and prayed the Lord’s prayer in Syriac and asked the Lord to bless the staff of the different offices and grant them success in their important ministry to their persecuted brothers and sisters.
His Holiness then discussed with His Excellency the different projects that are executed by the cooperation between the Syriac Orthodox Church and the government of Hungary through Hungary Helps. In particular, they spoke about the progress in the project of the construction of the social hall in the Community Center which is part of the Church complex in Latakia, as well as the restoration of houses in Old Homs and the construction of Meltho School in Erbil.
 

On December 13, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II presided over the Holy Qurobo that His Eminence Mor Dionysius John Kawak, Patriarchal Vicar in the Archdiocese of Eastern USA, at Georges Cathedral in Bab Touma – Damascus.
The Holy Qurobo was attended by their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar of the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, Mor Maurice Amsih, Archbishop of Jazeera and Euphrates, Mor Anthimos Jack Yacoub, Patriarchal Vicar for Youth Affairs and Christian Education, and Mor Boutros Kassis, Patriarchal Assistant.
In his sermon, His Eminence Mor Dionysius John Kawak spoke about the Sunday of the Revelation of St. Joseph who was a righteous person and took the responsibility of protecting Jesus and raising him. He also spoke about the late Archbishop Mor Selwanos Boutros Al-Nehmeh who was a close friend to His Eminence since the days of his monkhood. He described his character and humility and emphasized the traits that shaped his personality and made him close to all people. He shared the good memories of his ministry and how he always served the church with faithfulness and love.
The service of the priests was offered for the rest of the soul of Archbishop Mor Selwanos Boutros Al-Nehmeh of blessed memory. At the end of the Holy Qurobo, His Holiness and their Eminences received condolences in the church.
 

On December 11, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated the Holy Qurobo for the 3rd day of the passing away of the Thrice Blessed Archbishop Mor Selwanos Boutros Al- Nehmeh, at the Lady of the Girdle (Zunoro) Cathedral in Homs.
He was assisted by their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Theophilos George Saliba, Archbishop of Mount Lebanon and Tripoli, Mor Dionysius John Kawak, Patriarchal Vicar in the Archdiocese of Eastern USA, Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Archbishop of Mosul, Kirkuk, Kurdistan and Environs, Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar in the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, Mor Maurice Amsih, Archbishop of Jazeera and Euphrates, Mor Anthimos Jack Yakoub, Patriarchal Vicar for Youth Affairs and Christian Education, Mor Boutros Kassis, Patriarchal Assistant and Patriarchal Delegate for the Archdiocese of Aleppo and Environs, and Mor Yacoub Babawi, Patriarchal Vicar for Monks Affairs and the Administration of Mor Aphrem Theological Seminary in Maarat Saydnaya.
 
After the reading from the Holy Gospel, His Eminence Mor Theophilos Georges Saliba read a poem he wrote for the thrice blessed Mor Selwanos Boutros Al-Nehmeh as well as a eulogy where he speaks about his great personality and many talents and virtues.
His Holiness then declared that the orphanage which is currently under construction will be named: “Mor Selwanos Boutros Al-Nehmeh Care House” in commemoration of this great Archbishop and his efforts to build this home for the children.
His Holiness also prayed the special service of the 3rd day in memory of the late Archbishop.

On December 10, 2020, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated the Funeral Service of the Thrice Blessed Archbishop Mor Selwanos Boutros Al- Nehmeh, at the Lady of the Girdle (Zunoro) Cathedral in Homs.
He was assisted by their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Theophilos George Saliba, Archbishop of Mount Lebanon and Tripoli, Mor Dionysius John Kawak, Patriarchal Vicar in the Archdiocese of Eastern USA, Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Archbishop of Mosul, Kirkuk, Kurdistan and Environs, Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar in the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, Mor Maurice Amsih, Archbishop of Jazeera and Euphrates, Mor Anthimos Jack Yakoub, Patriarchal Vicar for Youth Affairs and Christian Education, Mor Boutros Kassis, Patriarchal Assistant and Patriarchal Delegate for the Archdiocese of Aleppo and Environs, and Mor Yacoub Babawi, Patriarchal Vicar for Monks Affairs and the Administration of Mor Aphrem Theological Seminary in Maarat Saydnaya.
The funeral service was also attended by heads of churches in Homs as well as representatives of Patriarchs and civil authorities and dignitaries. His Grace Armenian Orthodox Archbishop of Damascus Armash Nalbandian, His Grace Greek Orthodox Bishop Mousa Khoury representing His Beatitude Greek Orthodox Patriarch John X, His Grace Greek Orthodox Bishop Luka Khoury, His Grace Greek Catholic Archbishop Nicolas Antipas representing His Beatitude Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, Alexandria and Jerusalem Joseph Absi, His Grace Maronite Archbishop of Damascus Samir Nassar representing His Beatitude Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Raii, Very Rev. Georges Khoury, Patriarchal Administrator of the Syriac Catholic Archdiocese of Homs, Hama, Nabak and Environs representing His Beatitude Syriac Catholic Patriarch Mor Ignatius Youssef III Younan, and Rev. Yacoub Sabbagh representing Rev. Boutros Zaour, President of the Evangelical Churches in Syria.
The funeral was also attended by His Excellency Mr. Bassam Barsik, Governor of Homs, Mr. Omar Hourieh, Secretary of the Baath Party, General Mahmoud Faoury Commander of the Police in Homs, Mr. Suleiman Abrash representing Mr. Hammouda Sabbagh, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Melhem, Sheikh Khaled Terkawi, Sheikh Issam Masri Director of Awqaf in Homs, Mr. Moussa Abdelnour President of the League of Journalists and Dr. Mohammad Khaddour President of the Syrian Chamber of Tourism.
At the end of the Funeral Service, the thrice Blessed Mor Selwanos Boutros Al- Nehmeh was buried in his hometown Sadad.
His Holiness delivered a eulogy (the full Arabic text will be posted separately), in which he spoke about the faithfulness of the blessed thrice Archbishop Selwanos. He recalled the various responsibilities and services entrusted to him, expressed his deep sorrow and offered condolences to the Holy Church and the family of the Late Archbishop.
May his memory be eternal.
