On Dec 8-9, 2017, The Commission for Bilateral Dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Syriac Orthodox Church held its first session in Cherepovets in Russia.

Our Syriac Orthodox Church was represented by: Very Rev. Raban Jack Yakoub, Director of the Patriarchal Youth Department; Very Rev. Raban Roger-Youssef Akhrass, Director of the Department of Syriac Studies; Deacon Imad Syryany, Staff member of the Patriarchal Secretariat; Mr. Shadi Sarweh, Executive Director of St. Ephrem Patriarchal Development Committee (EPDC).

The Russian Orthodox Church was represented by: His Grace Bishop Flavian of Cherepovets and Belozersk; Very Rev. Hegumen Arseny (Sokolov), Representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia to the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and all the East; Mr. Sergey Alferov, Department for External Church Relations of Moscow Patriarchate (DECR) Staff member; Mr. Evgeny Bakhtin, DECR Staff member.

The Commission was established following the will expressed by Their Holinesses: our Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East and Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, and Patriarch Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, during their historical meeting in Moscow on November 10, 2015.

The Commission discussed collaboration between the two Churches in the following fields: Social service (Diakonia) and humanitarian cooperation, Contacts in the academic sphere, Monastic life, Interaction in media, public and cultural spheres.

The Commission had a very meaningful and fruitful discussion, during which a remarkable mutual understanding was reached for each of the above mentioned positions.

Apart from the meetings, members of the Commission visited various museums in Moscow and Cherepovets, and participated in the festive events held in commemoration of Sts. Athanasius and Theodosius – patron Saints of Cherepovets, which included a Holy Qurobo and a cultural musical concert.

His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II received His Excellency Hans-Peter Glanzer, New Austrian Embassy in Damascus, at the Patriarchate in Bab Touma in Damascus.

During the meeting, His Holiness discussed with His Excellency the situations in Syria. His Holiness wished the new ambassador a fruitful service for the strengthening of the relation between Syria and Austria.

The meeting was attended by Very Rev. Raban Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary, and Media Office Director, and Deacon Imad Syryany.

His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II blessed the meeting of the Archdiocesan Council and the various committees of the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, at the Patriarchal Headquarters in Damascus.
His Eminence Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar of the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus was present.
His Holiness listened to the members of the council and committees and gave his suggestions and recommendations to them for the development and better ministry of the Archdiocese.

His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II received His Excellency Cardinal Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio in Damascus, and His Excellency Archbishop Cyril Vasil, Secretary of the Congregation of Oriental Churches, at the Patriarchate Headquarters in Bab Touma, Damascus. During the meeting, His Holiness and discussed with his guests matters concerning the Church in the Middle East during these hard times, especially in Syria. His Eminence Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar in the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, attended the meeting.

The Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch hosted, at Mor Aphrem Monastery in Maarat Saydnaya, a formal reception in honor of the delegation from the United Kingdom, visiting Syria upon the invitation of His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II.
The delegation included members of the House of the Lords: Baroness Caroline Cox, Lord Raymond Hylton, Lord Carey of Clifton, Mrs. Eileen Carey, as well as religious leaders from the Anglican Church: Rev. Andrew Ashdown, Rev. David Thomas, in addition to Mrs. Nasrin Sharifi, and Mr. Samuel Mason.
His Holiness welcomed the delegation and asked them to help the Syrian people people, especially in lifting the economic sanctions imposed on Syria by the West.
The delegation had the opportunity to meet with dignitaries from Saydnaya.
His Eminence Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar of the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, attended the reception, as well as Christian leaders and dignitaries from Saydnaya.
 

His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II received a delegation from Elamkulam Church in India, at the Patriarchal Residence in Atchaneh. The delegation was headed by their Eminences: Mor Dioscoros Kuriakose, Metropolitan of the Simahasana Churches in the North of Kerala and Abbot of Malecuriz Dayro, and Mor Antheemos Mathews, Metropolitan of Muvattupuzha Region of Angamali Diocese.

Their Eminences Mor Philoxenus Matta Chamoun, and Mor Timotheos Matthew, Patriarchal Secretary for Indian Affairs, attended the meeting.

His Holiness discussed with the delegation matters related to their church.

The Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch hosted a formal reception in honor of a delegation from the United Kingdom.

The delegation is on a visit to Syria upon the invitation of His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II.

It included members of the House of the Lords: Baroness Caroline Cox, Lord Raymond Hylton, Lord Carey of Clifton, Mrs. Eileen Carey, as well as religious leaders from the Anglican Church: Rev. Andrew Ashdown, Rev. David Thomas, in addition to Mrs. Nasrin Sharifi, and Mr. Samuel Mason.

His Holiness welcomed the delegation and told them that they will be “our voice in the United Kingdom”. He added that this visit will help the members of the delegation to better understand the circumstances under which the Syrian people are living. The visit is a sign of solidarity between the members of the delegation and the Syrian people.

Baroness Cox, head of the delegation, thanked the Syrian people for being in the front line defending religious freedom. She expressed the willingness of the delegation to listen to what the Syrian people are going through and help them think of a better future as well as rebuild their land.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey expressed his joy to visit Syria again, this time being with the Syrian people in their crisis. He assured that the delegation will do its best to offer help to the Syrian people.

His Eminence Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Patriarchal Vicar of the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Damascus, attended the reception, as well as Christian leaders, dignitaries from the civil society, representatives from the Syrian Ministry of Endowments and Muslim Sheikhs.

His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II visited the Municipality Headquarter (Rathaus) in Memmingen, Germany.
Their Eminences Mor Philoxenus Mattias Nayis, Patriarchal Vicar in Germany, Mor Philoxenus Saliba Ozmen, Archbishop of Mardin and Diyarbakir, Mor Theophilus Kuriakose, Patriarchal Vicar in Europe, and Mor Julius Hanna Aydin, Director of External Relations in Germany, accompanied His Holiness along with the priests and members of the parish council.
His Holiness was received by the officials at the Rathaus where he signed the guestbook and thanked them for their warm reception. He spoke about the integration of our people in Memmingen and the welcome they receive at the city which is their new home.

His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated the Holy Qurobo at St. Joseph Church in Memmingen, Germany.
Their Eminences Mor Philoxenus Mattias Nayis, Patriarchal Vicar in Germany, Mor Philoxenus Saliba Ozmen, Archbishop of Mardin and Diyarbakir, Mor Theophilus Kuriakose, Patriarchal Vicar in Europe, and Mor Julius Hanna Aydin, Director of External Relations in Germany, assisted His Holiness in the Holy Qurobo.
In his sermon, His Holiness spoke about the annunciation of the birth of St. John the Baptist to Zachariah and how the faithful trust the Lord and His promises without putting conditions on Him. He explained also how the Lord takes care of the little flock and told the faithful to continue to preserve the faith of the forefathers and to the traditions of our Church.
Following the Holy Qurobo, a reception was organized in honor of His Holiness where the faithful received his blessings.

His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II meets representatives of the youth from the Dioceses of Central Europe and the Benelux.
Their Eminences: Mor Dionysius Issa Gurbuz, Patriarchal Vicar in Switzerland and Austria, Mor Philoxenus Mattias Nayis, Patriarchal Vicar in Germany, Mor Julius Hanna Aydin, Director of External Relations in Germany, and Mor George Kourieh, Patriarchal Vicar in Belgium, France and Luxembourg, attended the meeting.
The youth were given the opportunity to express their concerns and needs as well as their expectations from their mother church, the Syriac Orthodox Church.
They discussed many issues related to the use of Syriac language, as well as the need for more developed books for religious education that give a wider knowledge of the history and traditions of our church.
His Holiness and their Eminences gave their guiding remarks and a delegation from the youth will meet again to follow up the recommendation.
